MOSCOW – Russian authorities arrested 22 Tajiks, suspected of belonging to Hizb ut-Tahrir, in connection with an alleged plot to blow up a railway bridge, reported December 15.

Police reported finding explosives during the arrests. Two of those arrested were identified as Tajik citizens Akmal Gafurov and Alisher Otadzhonzade, suspected leaders of Moscow’s Hizb ut-Tahrir cell.

In other news, Moscow, Sverdlovsk and Volgograd Oblast authorities arrested five suspected members of the Islamic Party of Turkestan (IPT) from October to December, reported December 15. One of them, an unidentified 31-year-old from Isfara, Tajikistan, is the IPT’s emir, police said. Police said they have linked him to the September 3 Khudzhand suicide bombing.

The Russians are reviewing whether to extradite the suspects to Tajikistan and whether they committed any crimes in Russia.
