Pavlodar, March 18, Interfax – A Kazakh court has given a three-year suspended prison sentence to an active supporter of the outlawed Hizb ut-Tahrir extremist organization and has sentenced another one to three years in prison.

“Both convicts invited young people, mainly students and unemployed people, to a covert apartment and spread the extremist ideology among them,” Kairat Abylkasov, a high-ranking employee of the Pavlodar Region Prosecutor’s Office, said at a news conference on Friday.

“Furthermore, one of the convicts called for armed subversion of the government,” Abylkasov said.

One of the Hizb ut-Tahrir activists then repented his crime, receiving a suspended prison sentence, the official said.

A similar criminal case has already been forwarded to court, but no suspects have been detained yet, he said.

The Kazakh authorities have recognized 13 organizations as terrorist and one as extremist and have banned their activities on the territory of the republic.
